History of the 46th Gloucester Scout Group

2024Cotswold Marathon Two Scout Teams entered, the girls team completed the Bronze Route (10 miles) in a time of 3hrs 51mins and they won the fastest female trophy, the boys team completed the Bronze Route (10 miles) in a time of 4hrs 27mins. The Leaders/helpers team won the fastest team for the Gold route (30 miles) in a time of 8hrs 10mins.
First Squirrels and Beavers joint sleepover was held on 17th to 18th February at Murray Hall. 7 Squirrels and 9 Beavers attended the sleepover, learning how to build a shelter, play games, make chocolate crispy cakes and watched a movie.
2023Squirrels Section started on Thursday 2nd February, they met at St. John’s Church Hall, St. John’s Lane from 5pm to 6pm with 14 young people. We are the first Group in Gloucester to start the new Squirrel section. The Squirrel Leader is Kat Turner, Assistants are Kathy Quinnell and Jane Harley. They were invested on 16th February 2023.
Cotswold Marathon Mark Turner from our Group along with Steve Cullis and Phil Manning (from Stroud district) won the fastest overall team of the Gold Route (30 miles) in a time of 8 hours 21 minutes. We think this is the first time that someone from our Group has won the marathon. It was also the 50th Cotswold Marathon to be held.
Group’s 70th Anniversary Celebration was held at Murray Hall on 17th September. Lots of members present and past came along to look at photographs, video’s, read about the history and to have a go at some activities which included cooking twists, soft archery to name just a few. it was a very wet day but this didn’t dampen the fun. Nearly 100 people came along despite the rain and also a past member from Australia phoned while the event was being set up.
2022Group Camp was held at Trac, Malswick on Friday 10th June till Sunday 12th June. On camp were 7 Beavers, 18 Cubs, 15 Scouts, 8 Explorers and 8 Leaders/helpers. 
New Group Scout Leader Thomas Shephard became Group Scout Leader, making history as the youngest Group Scout Leader of our Group at 18 years old.
2021Coronavirus pandemic continued. Once again the coronavirus pandemic meant that meetings were a mix of virtual and outdoors depending on restrictions until October when the Group were allowed to meet indoors again following restrictions which included face mask wearing and social distancing.
Group. The Band, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts started meeting at St. John’s Church Hall, St. John’s Lane in October, the Explorers moved in December due to already having meetings booked.
Virtual Cotswold Marathon. Lots of members and parents past and present took part in the virtual Cotswold Marathon with many miles walked during the time allowed.
All sections (including the band) moved to meeting indoors at St. John’s Church Hall, St. John’s Lane, Gloucester.
Weekend Camps. Camping was allowed also in October some of the Explorers attended the County event Beast of the Rainbow at Cranham Scout Camp Site, and the Beavers and Cubs had a weekend indoors at Cranham Scout Camp Site with a Halloween Theme.
2020Scouting became virtual due to coronavirus pandemic. From the 16th March all face to face Scouting was cancelled due to Coronavirus social distancing measures being started. The members continued to take part in Scouting virtually with the Cubs, Scouts and Explorers having virtual meetings. Sadly this meant that camps, activities and trips have had to be cancelled for the time being. 
Virtual record breaking attempt camp. Members were challenged to camp at home in dens or tents inside and out including 13 members took part in a record breaking attempt on the 30th April for the most people camping at the same time. 
New Group Scout Leader. Robert Green became Group Scout Leader.
2019Queens Scout Award. Kat Turner was awarded her Queens Scout Award.
Group Camp was held at Trac, Malswick on Friday 7th June till Sunday 9th June. On camp were 7 Beavers, 21 Cubs, 11 Scouts, 5 Explorers and 12 Leaders/helpers. During the camp they made rafts and attempted to get on them in the lake. We also had a visit from a Police Dog handler, during which one of the Leaders was volunteered to be attacked by the dog on 7th – 9th June.
World Scout Jamboree. Kat Turner (Assistant Cub Scout Leader) and Thomas Shephard of the Explorers attended the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, USA. 
Summer Camps. 14 Cubs went on Summer Camp to Hollygate Scout Camp Site in Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire, during the camp they visited lots of places in the area which included having a go at baking cakes at a windmill.  11 Scouts went on Summer Camp to Butcher’s Coppice Scout Camp Site, during the camp they visited Brownsea Island which is where the first Scout camp was held in 1907.
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped at Ryhdd Covet, Kidderminster on 10th – 12th May during the camp they visited West Midlands Safari Park which is next door to the site. The Beavers had a sleepover at St. Mary’s Congregational hall during the sleepover they visited the Folk Museum and also went up Gloucester Cathedral Tower, 18th – 19th October. The Cubs camped indoors at Cranham on 11th – 13th October, they also had a sleepover at Murray Hall, the Leaders greeted the Cubs dressed up as Elves for their Christmas themed sleepover on 21st – 22nd December.
2018Group Camp was held at Trac, Malswick on Friday 8th June till Sunday 10th June. On camp were 13 Beavers, 20 Cubs, 14 Scouts, 5 Explorers and 16 Leaders/helpers. During the camp they made cardboard boats which they then sailed on the lake, they also had a chance to have a go on a giant stand up paddle board along with all the other activities that are available at Trac on 9th – 10th June.
Summer Camps. Explorers were first on Summer Camp, this year they went to Tolmers Scout Camp Site, near Potters Bar where they took part in the activity week organised by the site. 11 Explorers were on camp.  9 Scouts went on Summer camp next, this year they went to Miskin Mill Scout Camp Site, during the camp they had a go at White Water Rafting.  15 Cubs went on Summer Camp last they also went to Miskin Mill Scout Camp Site near Cardiff.
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers. The Cubs had a sleepover at Murray Hall on 24th – 25th February. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped indoors at Alfrey Scout Camp Site, Merridan during the camp they went to Drayton Manor Theme Park, 31st March – 1st April. The Beavers had a sleepover at Murray hall on 26th – 27th October. The Cubs had a sleepover at Gobananas and an indoor camp at Trac, Malswick on 14th – 16th December.
2017Group Camp was held at Trac, Malswick on Friday 19th till Sunday 21st May. Everyone camped for two nights. On the camp were 15 Beavers, 15 Cubs, 14 Scouts, 4 Explorers and 17 Leaders/helpers. During the camp they had the opportunity to have a go at rafting, orienteering, obstacle course, backwoods cooking and many other activities throughout the weekend, on 19th – 21st May.
Band. Celebrated it’s 60th Anniversary on 2nd July at Murray Hall, 3 founder members of the band were at the event, the band performed, and also the adult band that is made up of former and current members called Blast from the Past performed, also on display were photo’s and other memorabilia.
Summer Camps. The Cubs and Scouts were held at Torbay Scout Camp Site in Watcombe, Devon. 
Weekend Camps. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped indoors at The Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth, Powys, Wales, 14th – 16th April. The Cubs camped at Penn Wood Scout Centre, Selsley Common on 30th September – 1st October, they also had an indoor camp at Cranham Scout Camp Site on 8th – 9th December.
2016Summer Camps. The Explorers was held at Tolmers Scout Campsite, Cuffley, Potters Bar.  Summer Camp for the Cubs was held at Hollygate Scout Camp Site, Cotgrave, Nottingham.  Summer Camp for the Scouts was held at Phasels Wood Scout Camp Site, Hemel Hempstead.
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers. The Band members had an indoor training camp at Trac on 8th – 10th April, The Cubs camped at Woodhouse park, Almondsbury with Cubs from Gloucester District to celebrate the Centenary of Cubs. The Cub Sixers and Seconders stayed on two narrowboats on the Grand Union Canal starting and finishing at Harefield, 3rd – 5th June, The Cubs had a sleepover at Gobananas in Stroud, they also camped at Penn Wood Scout Centre, Selsley Common on 1st – 2nd October and had an indoor camp at Trac on 2nd – 4th November.
2015District Cub Quiz. The Cubs came in first and third place in Gloucester District Cub Quiz.
Cotswold Marathon. Steve Paradine, Steve Rodway & Clive Allen came in 3rd place and won the fastest Veterans team (over 30’s) in a time of 11hrs 34mins in the Cotswold Marathon.
Group Camp was held at Trac, Malswick on Friday 12th till Sunday 14th June. This year the Beavers camped for two nights. There were 18 Cubs, 10 Scouts, 9 Beavers and 15 Leaders. During the camp they had the opportunity to go kayaking, archery, obstacle course, pedal cars, do some backwoods cooking, rafting, glass painting, along with some other games, activities, a disco and campfire.
New Group Scout Leader. Lorna Dowd became the first female Group Scout Leader of our Group.
Summer Camps. The Scouts was held at Eaton Vale Activity Centre in Norwich. The Cubs and Explorers both camped at Torbay Scout Camp Site in Watcombe on separate weeks.
Weekend Camps. The Band members had an indoor training weekend at Trac on 6th – 7th March. The Cub Sixers and Seconders stayed on two narrowboats on the Grand Union Canal starting and finishing at Harefield, 10th – 12th April The Cubs camped at Cranham on 25th – 27th September. they also had an indoor camp at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury on 4th – 6th December..
2014Cotswold Marathon. Mark Turner, Steve Rodway & Steve Paradine won the fastest team in the Cotswold Class and the fastest Veterans team (over 30’s) in the Cotswold Marathon.
Group Camp was held at Trac, Malswick on Friday 9th till Sunday 11th May. 10 Cubs, 12 Scouts, 8 Explorers and 11 Leaders camped for the two nights, 14 Beavers camped for one night. During the camp, Police Officers came along for nearly the whole of Saturday where the younger members became Police Officers and the Leaders became villains. Also a lady came along with her Birds of Prey which everyone had an opportunity to fly. Chloe became the first Beaver in our Group to gain every badge available to Beavers.
Summer Camps. The Cubs was held at Miskin Mill Scout Camp Site near Cardiff, the Scouts Summer Camp was held at Rhydd Covert Scout Camp site in Kidderminster and the Explorers Summer Camp was held at Tolmers Scout Activity Centre.
Weekend Camps. The Band members had an indoor training camp at Trac on 14th – 15th March. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped at Kinver Scout Camp Site on 20th – 22nd June, during the camp they visited West Midlands Safari Park. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury on 5th – 7th December.
2013Cotswold Marathon. Mark Turner, Steve Rodway & Steve Paradine came in 3rd place and won the fastest team in the Cotswold Class and the fastest Veterans team (over 30’s) in a time of 11hrs 3mins.
Group 60th Anniversary. On 12th May the Group held their 60th Anniversary Celebration at Murray Hall, Tuffley, which many members from the past and present came along to look at the photo’s and other memorabilia. During the afternoon each section performed a play about the history of their section.
Group camp was held at Trac, Malswick on Friday 17th till Sunday 19th May, 18 Cubs, 10 Scouts, 11 Explorers & 13 Leaders camped for the two nights, 14 Beavers joined them on the Saturday and camped in tents (Beavers were only allowed to camp for one night at this time).
Summer Camps The Cubs and Explorer Scouts was held at Dunham Park Scout Camp Site in Altrincham, with the Cubs camping first followed by the Explorers. The Scouts camped at Torbay Scout Campsite in Watcombe.
Weekend Camps. The Band had an indoor training weekend at Trac, 13th – 14th April. The Cub Sixers and Seconders stayed on two narrowboats on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal starting and finishing at Hatherton, 21st – 23rd June. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Holly Barn in the Forest of Dean, with a Christmas Theme on 29th November – 1st December.
2012Cotswold Marathon. Steve Rodway, Steve Paradine & Mark Turner came in 2nd place for the Gold Route (38 miles) in a time of 12hrs 35mins.
Summer Camps. The Cubs and Scouts was held at Torbay Scout Campsite in Watcombe, the Cubs camped for the first week and were followed by the Scouts. The Explorer Scouts camped at Tolmers Scout Camp Site, Cuffley for the activity week.
Group Camp. Was at Trac, this years camp was cancelled earlier in the year due to the site being flooded, so was held on 5th – 7th October instead. The Beavers stayed indoors for one night, the Cubs, Scouts and Explorers camped outside for the weekend.
Weekend Camps. The Band members had an indoor training camp at Trac on 31st March – 1st April. The Cub Sixers and Seconders stayed indoors at Bishops Lydeard Scout Camp site on 11th – 13th May. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Cranham on 26th – 28th November.
2011Cotswold Marathon. Casey Turner, Rheanna Dowd & Vincent Ashby won the fastest mixed team for the Bronze Route (12 miles) in a time of 4hrs 42mins. Andre Curtis, Ashley Rodway & Nathan Bull came 3rd in the Bronze Route in a time of 3hrs 36mins. Steve Paradine, Mark Turner, Steve Rodway along with German Scout Leaders from Stockstadt am Main Hilmar Debor & Hanno Baur came 3rd in the Gold Route (38 miles) and also won the fastest team in the Cotswold Class and the fastest Veterans Team (over 30’s) in a time of 10hrs 55mins.
Summer Camps. The Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts was held at The Oaks in Charnwood, Leicestershire. The Explorers camped for the first week and were followed by the Cubs and Scouts.
Group Camp. Was held at Tom Roberts Activity Centre (Trac) on 20th – 22nd May. The Beavers stayed indoors for the Saturday night, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers stayed for the whole weekend. (Beavers were only allowed to stay indoors for one night at the time).
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers. The Explorers had a wakeover/sleepover at Murray Hall on 18th – 19th February. The Beavers and Cubs had a sleepover over at Murray Hall on 25th – 26th February. The Cub Sixers and Seconders stayed on two narrowboats on the Grand Union Canal starting and finishing at Braunston. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury on 28th – 30th October.
2010Cotswold Marathon. Ashley Rodway, Casey Turner & Josh Dowd came in 2nd for the Bronze route (12 miles) in a time of 4hrs 22mins. Kathryn Turner, Phillip Mayo, Jordan Turner & Aimee Dowd came 1st in the Silver Route (18 miles) in a time of 5hrs 29mins. Mark Turner, Steve Paradine, Ben Dowd along with German Scout Leaders from Stockstadt am Main Hilmar Debor & Hanno Baur came 3rd in the Gold Route (38 miles) in a time of 11hrs 41mins.
Summer Camps. The Cubs and Scouts was another very wet and muddy camp at Silver Cross Scout Camp Site, Wales, 14th – 21st August. The Explorer Scouts camped at Tolmers Scout Camp Site, Cuffley for the activity week.
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers. The Explorers had an indoor camp at Buckstone Centre, Forest of Dean on 12th – 14th March. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped indoors at Bishops Lydeard Scout Camp Site, 2nd – 5th April during the camp they went on a Steam Train to Minehead. The Scout Patrol leaders and assistants camped at Youlbury, Oxford on 17th – 18th April. The Cubs camped at Rhydd Covet Scout Camp Site, Kidderminster, 8th – 9th May, they also had an indoor camp at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury, 22nd – 24th October. The Beavers had a sleepover at Murray hall on 29th – 30th May. The Scouts had an indoor camp at Buckstone Centre, Forest of Dean on 5th – 7th November.
New Group Scout Leader. Roy Huntley took over from Colin Turner as Group Scout Leader on 1st November. Colin became Assistant Group Scout Leader along with Steve Crown.
2009Summer Camps. for the Cubs and Scouts was held at Braggers Wood Scout Camp Site, Bournemouth, 15th – 22nd August. The Explorer Scouts camped at Tolmers Scout Camp Site, Cuffley for the Activity week,.
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers. The Cub Sixers and Seconders stayed on two narrowboats on the Grand Union starting and finishing at Braunston, 10th – 12th April. The Beavers had a sleepover at Calton Road Junior School on 19th – 20th June. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Buckstone Centre, Forest of Dean with a Halloween Theme, 30th October – 1st November. The Scouts had an indoor camp at Youlbury, Oxford, 27th – 29th November.
2008Cotswold Marathon. Abby Paradine, Aimee Dowd & Kathryn Turner won the female novice trophy for the Bronze route (12 miles) in a time of 4hrs 49mins.
Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts was held at Hargreaves Scout Camp Site, Romford, this was a joint camp with the Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts from Stockstadt am Main, 9th – 16th August.
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers. The Cubs had a sleepover at St. Aldates Church Hall, 23rd – 24th February. The Scout Patrol leaders and assistants camped at Misken Mill, near Cardiff on 28th – 30th March. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped at Doniford, near Minehead, 3rd – 5th May. The Beavers had a sleepover at Calton Road Junior School on 13th – 14th June. The Explorers camped at Cranham on 21st – 22nd June. The Cubs camped indoors at Miskin Mill, near Cardiff, 24th – 26th October. The Band stayed indoors at Bishops Lydeard after taking part in Taunton Carnival, on 18th – 19th October. The Scouts camped indoors at Miskin Mill, 14th – 16th November.
2007Cotswold Marathon. Tracey Walsh won the fastest female for the full route in a time of 14hrs 29mins.
Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts was held at Milton Bryan Scout Camp site, Woburn, 11th – 18th August.
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers/Backpackings. The Cubs had a New Year sleepover at Murray Hall on 13th – 14th January. The Band members had a training camp at Warren Oak Scout Camp Site, Ledbury, 17th 18th March. The Explorers went backpacking in the Forest of Dean, 14th – 15th April. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped at Down Hatherley, 29th June – 1st July. The Beavers and Cubs had a sleepover at Murray Hall, 29th – 30th September. The Leaders went to look for camp sites in London, 12th – 14th October. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Cranham Scout Camp Site, 26th – 28th October. The Scouts had an indoor camp at Youlbury Scout Camp Site, Oxford, 16th – 18th November.
Centenary of Scouting events. The Cubs, Scouts and Explorers camped at Cattle Country for 2 nights, the Beavers joined for 1 night indoors, everyone ended up sleeping indoors due to a tornado destroying nearly all of the tents, 26th – 28th May. On the 1st August Gloucester District held a Centenary Sunrise Event on Robinswood Hill, members were asked to meet at Robinswood Hill to attend the event and renew their promise or if they were unable to attend to make their promise at 8am wherever they were, some of our members were away on holiday and sent in photos of them renewing their promise on holiday, the evening before the district held a camp fire at the bottom of Robinswood Hill which members of the Group attended.
The Band performed at St. James Park Easter Event, led Gloucester Easter Parade and the opening for Beatrix Potter Museum, led the Forest of Dean District Scouts St. Georges Day Parade at Beechenhurst, led Gloucester District Scouts St. Georges Day parade. This year the Band celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a celebration at Murray Hall where members past and present gathered to reminisce, look at photos from over the years, the current band performed, also past members joined in and performed with the current members as well.
2006Camp in Germany. During April the Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts stayed a week in Stockstadt am Main with the German Scouts from Stockstadt am Main. for 8 nights, 10th – 16th April.
Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts was held at Rhydd Covert, Kidderminster, which is the site next door to West Midlands Safari park, 29th July – 1st August..
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers. The Cubs had a sleepover at Murray Hall on 14th – 15th January. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped at Down Hatherley, 27th – 28th May. The Beavers and Cubs had a sleepover at Murray Hall on 17th – 18th June, during which they took part in a record breaking attempt of the Giant Sleepover. The Leaders had a camp at Warren Oak Scout Camp Site, Ledbury, 18th – 20th August. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Biblins, Forest of Dean, 20th – 22nd October. The Scouts had an indoor camp at Warren Oak, Ledbury on 17th – 19th November.
2005Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts was held at Braggers Wood Scout Camp Site, Bournemouth for 7 nights. During the camp they visited Monkey World, Brownsea Island, Poole, Knowll Beach, Paultons Theme Park and Moors Valley Country Park, 6th – 13th August.
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers. The Cubs, Scouts and Explorers went on a weekend camp to Cranham for 2 nights, The Beavers visited on the Sunday, 6th – 8th May. The Cubs and had an indoor weekend at Woodhouse Park for 2 nights with an underwater theme, 7th – 9th October. The Beavers and Cubs took part in the Giant Sleepover Record Breaking attempt, they stayed for 1 night at Murray Hall on 18th – 19th June. The Cub Sixers and Seconders attended the District Sixers and Seconders evening on Robinswood Hill, then continued with a weekend camp in Down Hatherley for 2 nights, during the camp they tried slot car racing at Dowtys, 24th – 26th June.
The Band took part in Stroud Marching Band Competition, which involved a parade through the town followed by a concert performance.
2004Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts was held at Consall Scout Camp Site, Stoke on Trent. for 7 nights, 31st July – 7th August.
Weekend Camps. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury with a medieval theme for 2 nights, 22nd – 24th October. The Cub Sixers and Seconders attended the District Sixers and Seconders evening on Robinswood Hill and then continued with a weekend camp at Down Hatherley for 2 nights on 18th – 20th June. The Cubs and Scouts camped at Penn wood Scout Centre, Selsley Common on 22nd – 23rd May.
2003Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts was held at Rhydd Covert Scout Camp Site, Kidderminster which is next door to West Midlands Safari park, on 3rd – 9th August.
Group. On 30th November the Group held their 50th Anniversary Celebration at Murray Hall, Tuffley. Lots of members from the past and present came along to reminisce over the photo’s and meet up with old friends from the past.
Weekend Camps/Sleepovers. The Cub Sixers and Seconders attended the District Sixers and Seconders evening on Robinswood Hill and then continued the weekend with a camp in Down Hatherley for 2 nights, on 27th – 29th June. They also had an indoor weekend camp at Cranham for 2 nights on 21st – 23rd March, they also had a sleepover at Murray Hall on 21st – 22nd November.
2002Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts and Network was held at Kingsdown Scout Camp Site, Kent, this was a joint camp with the Scouts and Venture Scouts from Stockstadt am Main, Germany, 3rd – 11th August.
Weekend Camps. The Venture Scouts had a weekend camp at Husihwoods Scout Camp site, Taunton for 2 nights. the Cubs went on an indoor camp at Bracelands, Forest of Dean for 2 nights on 5th – 7th April and also at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury the theme for this camp was Tigger on 22nd – 24th November. The Scouts indoor weekend was at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury. The Explorers camped at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped at Down Hatherley on 28th – 30th June.
The Group held a concert at Widden School, The band played Jesus Christ Superstar Fanfare, Phantom of the Opera, Any Dream Will Do, a Mallet Medley, and Tonight. Next were the Beavers singing some action songs. Then the older Venture Scouts involving the audience with a story about the Old Scout Bus, then the newest band recruits from the band played a few tunes for the first time in public. The Cubs did their version of the Jungle News, with elephants marching, monkeys waving flags and a snake giving the weather forecast. The Scouts did some singing and to finish the evening the band played a few more tunes from their repertoire.
National Scouting change. Venture Scouts changed names to Explorer Scouts in February with a change of age range to 14 – 18. A new section for 18 – 25 year olds was started and called Network. Andy and Shelley Huntley became Explorer Scout Leaders.
The Group website was started.
2001Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Venture Scouts was held at Huishwoods Scout Camp Site, Taunton for 7 nights on the way to the camp the coach wipers broke and had to be repaired which meant 8 hours before the arrived at camp, the coach then broke down during the week on the way back from Somerwest World (Butlins), members were transported back to camp by the Police, 18th – 25th August..
Weekend Camps and back packing weekends. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped in Down Hatherley on 20th – 22nd July. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Warren Oak Scout Camp site, Ledbury for 2 nights, 26th – 28th October. The Venture Scouts went back packing in the Forest of Dean on 28th – 29th July.
The Band competed in Black Country Contest, the 25th Three Counties Marching Youth Band Championships (that the Group organised) and also qualified and completed at the British Youth Band Association national Finals held at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.
2000Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Venture Scouts was held in Germany, this was a joint camp with a Scout Group from Stockstadt am Main. They stayed overnight in Stockstadt am Main, then camped jointly with the Stockstadt Scout Group at Westenhor Scout Camp Site a total of 9 nights which included 2 nights travelling on the coach, 27th July – 5th August.
Weekend Camps. The Cub Sixer’s and Seconder’s took part in Gloucester District Sixer’s and Seconder’s evening on Robinswood Hill, they then spent the weekend camping in Down Hatherley, 12th – 14th May. The Venture Scouts spent 3 night during Easter camping at Chellwood, near Bath. Also this year they went back packing in the Forest of Dean on a very cold weekend, 15th – 16th January and then again on 29th September – 1st October. The Cubs and Venture Scouts had an indoor camp at Warren Oak Camp Site, Ledbury with the theme of Astronomy they also visited Newent Birds of Prey Centre, on 25th – 26th November. The Scouts had an indoor weekend camp at Youlbury Scout Camp site, Oxford for 2 nights.
Venture Scouts. They did a 15 mile sponsored walk to raise funds for the coach, they started at St. James Church hall, Upton Street, Tredworth, then round Robinswood Hill, across a footpath to Nass Farm, then onto Quedgeley, followed the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal to Hempsted, up into Hempsted following a footpath round by Lady’s Well, onto Llanthony Road and back to St. James Church Hall.
The Band competed in Novice Class in Burnley (where they spent the weekend), Soundwell, Midsomer Norton, the Three Counties Marching Youth Band Championships, they also qualified for the British Youth Band National Finals at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. They performed at a Youth Tattoo at Cheltenham Race Course and also in Gloucester Docks for the BBC One Music Live Week
1999Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Venture Scouts was held at Tolmers Scout Camp Site (Activity Week), London, 31st July – 7th August.
Weekend Camps and Back Packing weekends. Some German Leaders and Venture Scouts visited us and stayed in Gloucester District Scout HQ, Murray Hall, Tuflley Lane, they also camped at the weekend with some of our Leaders and Venture Scouts at Rhydd Covet campsite, Kidderminster during the camp they visited West Midlands Safari Park which is next door to the site. Cubs and Ventures had an indoor camp at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury for 2 nights, 5th – 7th November. The Venture Scouts went back packing in the Forest of Dean during an extremely hot weekend, 17th – 18th July. The Cub Sixers and Seconders camped at Down Hatherley in June.
Queens Scout Award. Mark Turner was presented with the Queen Scout Award.
County Raft Race for Venture Scouts. Adam Turner, Andy Clay, Karl Simpson took part in the Raft Race on the River Wye from Ross to Lower Lydbrook they finished in a time of 2 hours 56 minutes.
County Ready Steady Cook Competition for Venture Scouts. Andy Clay, Adam Turner and Karl Simpson won the competition which was held at Cranham Scout Camp site.
1998Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Venture Scouts was held at Silver Cross Scout Camp Site, Swansea. Those who went on this camp may recall it being very wet and muddy.
Weekend Camps and Back packing weekends. The Cubs had their indoor camp at Cranham Scout HQ for 2 nights, the Venture Scouts went along and camped outside. The Venture Scouts camped at Wigpool and went canoeing on the River Wye. The Venture Scouts also went back packing from Stroud to Gloucester.
Venture Scouts. They had fun on an overnight Mission Impossible hike in the Forest of Dean where they had to solve the clues and find their way around the route.
Leaders. Some of the Leaders travelled to Stockstadt am Main in Germany for a week to visit the German Scout Group who had previously visited us, this was part of arranging a joint camp.
County Raft Race for Venture Scouts. Richard Simpson, Adam Turner, Matthew and Grant Bowden took part in the raft race from Ross on Wye to Lower Lydbrook (8 miles) they completed the race in a time of 2 hours 51 minutes.
The Band qualified and competed in Contest Class at the British Youth Band Championship Finals which were held at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.
1997Summer Camp for the Cubs, Scouts and Venture Scouts was held at Rhydd Covet Scout Camp Site, Kidderminster, which is next door to West Midlands Safari Park for a week.
Weekend Camp. The Cubs and Venture Scouts camped indoors at Bracelands in the Forest of Dean.
The Band. Roy Huntley became bandmaster. The Band held their 40th Anniversary at Christchurch Hall, Montpellier. Photographs were on display, the band played a selection of tunes from the bands history starting with the first bugle tune that was played by the band. Other tunes played were – Boogie Woogie, Yellow Bird, Cherry Pink, Chattanooga Choo Choo, White Shade of Pale, Sweet Caroline, Simple Simon, Yesterday, Money, Money, Money, Globe Trotter, Gonna Fly Now (Rocky), Somewhere out there and Born Free. A selection of slides were shown, the band performed their 1997 display playing tunes from the 1950’s – At the Hop, Singing the Blues, All I have to do is Dream. Then videos were put on for people to watch and reminisce. The Band also changed names again due to the closure of the 14th Gloucester Guide Company and became known as Gloster Gladiators Scout Band.
1996Cotswold Marathon. Stephen White, Richard Simpson and Mark Bridle came in 3rd place in a time of 4hrs 28mins for the 18 mile section.
Summer Camp for the Cubs and Scouts was held at Butchers Coppice Scout Camp Site, Bournemouth for 7 nights.
Weekend Camp. Cubs had an indoor camp at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury for 2 nights.
The Band. Nigel Spicer became bandmaster, then Ruth Turner stood in.
1995Cotswold Marathon. John Orpin, Mike White & Val Heaven won the fastest team in the Cotswold Class (over 30’s) for the full route, Val Heaven also won the fastest female in a time of 10hrs 53mins.
Summer Camp for the Cubs and Scouts was held at Walton Firs Scout Camp Site, Cobham, London for a week.
Weekend Camp. Cubs had an indoor camp at Bracelands (2 nights).

Weekend Camp. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Cranham Scout HQ for 2 nights.
1993Cotswold Marathon. John Orpin, John Quinnell & Val Heaven won the fastest team in the Cotswold Class (over 30’s) for the full route, Val Heaven also won the fastest female in a time of 10hrs 42mins.
Forest of Dean Marathon. Kathy Price, Ruth and Joy Turner won the Fellowship Trophy, John Quinnell, John Orpin and Val Heaven won a trophy for the 38 miles route. These two teams were the only teams to complete the 38 mile route the event only ran for 2 years.
Summer Camp for the Cubs and Scouts was held at Penlan, St. Clears, Tenby for a week.
Weekend Camp. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury.
The Band formed a Senior Colour Guard Section (flag waving, dancing, etc), They also purchased a separate uniform for contests and carnivals consisting of white shako hats, brown trousers with a green strip, khaki tunic top, green cloak off shoulder and a green cumberband and cravat.

Group. On 22nd February the Group opened up all their sections for girls to join.

The Band competed at the Royal Albert Hall, Nuneaton, Great Barr, Midsomer Norton, Kingswood, Truro (where they spent the weekend), Nottingham and Three Counties Marching Youth Band Championships which was held at the Prince of Wales Stadium for the first time. They performed at Winchcombe Fete, Chamwell School Fete, Leonard Stanley, Cheltenham and Gloucester Carnival, Brockworth Steam Rally, Gloucester Festival of Remembrance and Gloucester and Kingstanley Remembrance Day Parade.
1990Summer Camps. The Cubs and Scouts camped at Corf Scout Camp Site in the Isle of Wight. The Venture Scouts went on a narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal from Braunston.
Weekend Camps/Back Packing. The Ventures camped at Torquay Scout Camp Site in Watcombe during the August Bank Holiday, they also backpacked along the Offas Dyke Path from the Kymin, 2nd – 4th November.
County Raft Race for Venture Scouts. Ian Quinnell, Darren Cook, Nick Heaven and Lee Palmer were one team, Laura Orpin, Debbie Heaven, Kathy Price and Clair Cooper were a second team and Joy Turner, Becky Whitson, James Heath and Malcolm Wood were another team who took part in the raft race, we don’t have a record of the teams finishing times.

The Band competed at the Royal Albert Hall, Ilfracombe (where they spent the weekend), Nuneaton, Black Country, Kingswood (Soundwell), Truro (where they spent the weekend) and Nottingham Band contests. they performed at the E & A Building Society, Gloucester Scouts St. Georges Day Parade, Gloucester Divisional Guide Day, Christchurch Fete, Meco Minding Open Day (Dowty’s), Winchcombe Fete, Brockworth Model Steam Rally, Stonehouse, Cheltenham, and Gloucester Carnivals, Leonard Stanley Fayre & Carnival, Pershore Horse Fayre, Gloucester Docks Event and Evesham and Gloucester Remembrance Day Parades.
1989Summer Camps. The Chequers Bridge Centre Scout Troop was held at Youlbury Scout Camp Site, Oxfordshire.  The Hemspted Scout Troop was held at Llantwit Major. The Venture Scouts went to the Lech Valley in Austria,
Weekend Camps/Back Packing. The Cubs had an indoor camp at Youlbury. The Ventures went backpacking on 6th – 8th January around Talybont, they also went backpacking along Offas Dyke Path starting from the Kymin on 16th – 18th June, they also climbed Snowdon, they also backpacked along Torbay Coast Path, 27th – 28th October.
The Band competed at the Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham, Bristol and North Avon, and Stoke on Trent Contests. They held their annual inspection at Saintbridge School. They performed at Winifield Cullis School Fete, Hempsted School Fete, at the Everyman Theatre for Prince Edward (members may remember the rehearsal on the stage, when Nigel Spicer was walking backwards through the seating to check the sound and disappeared down a hole in the floor), St. Peter’s School Fete, Gloucester and Cains Cross Carnivals, Gloucester Festival of Remembrance at the Leisure Centre, Evesham and Gloucester Remembrance Day Parades, at the fireworks display on the Oxlease and at Ermin House Fete.
1988Cotswold Marathon. Joy Turner won the fastest female novice for the full route of the Cotswold Marathon in a time of 11hrs 30mins.
Summer Camp for the Cubs was held at Penlan, St. Clears, Tenby.
Venture Scouts Celebrate 21st Birthday. During the year Venture Scouts were given challenges to complete, one of them was to camp in an unusual place. Our Ventures camped on the platform at Gloucester Railway Station. The Ventures were Ian Baldwin, Robert Williams, Alan Price, Simon Jarvis, Ruth and Joy Turner, Laura Orpin, Debbie Heaven, Malcolm Wood, James Heath and Tim Vitale. Venture Scout Leader was Nigel Spicer.
Weekend Camps/Back packing. The Ventures climbed Snowdon crossing Grib Goch, 10th – 11th September.
The Band entered the Royal Albert Hall, Nuneaton, Midsomer Norton, Bristol North Avon, Scout Nationals at Milton Keynes and the Three Counties Marching Youth Band Championships. They also performed at Kingstanley Fete, Longford School Fete, newent and Gloucester Carnival, Coalway Gala, Fireworks display at the Oxlease, Gloucester Festival of Remembrance in the Leisure Centre, and Gloucester and Evesham Remembrance Day Parades. They also started meeting at the Jamaican Club on Monday nights.
1987Group. All sections who met at Christchurch moved to Chequers Bridge Centre for meetings. Hempsted sections continued meeting in Hempsted.
Summer Camp for the Cubs and Scouts was held at Gilwell Park, London.
The Band changed names to become the Gloster Gladiators Scout & Guide Band. They competed at the Royal Albert Hall, Crawley, Three Counties Marching Youth Band Championships, Tewkesbury, Bristol & Avon, Kidsgrove and North London Contests. They performed at Vintage Rally in Stonehouse, held a a concert at Chequers Bridge Centre, performed at the Milk Race at Gloucester Guildhall, Wild West Fayre in Kingstanley, Garden party in Cainscross, Harewood School American evening, St. Peters School Fete, Denmark Road Fete, Christchurch Fete, Gloucester Carnival, Gordon League Rugby Club Fete, Dick Sheppard Car Ramp Challenge, Gloucestershire Multiple Sclerosis Information & Therapy Centre fete, Fireworks display on the Oxlease, Evesham and Gloucester Remembrance Day parades. They achieved 25th place out of 161 in the British Youth Band Association League (BYBA).
1986Summer Camps. The First Summer Camp for the Cubs was held at Gilwell Park, London.  The Scouts camped at Keyhaven, Hampshire.
The Band competed in the Royal Albert hall, the Scout Nationals in Peterborough, Warwick, Birmingham, Kidsgrove (which was held at a Garden Festival this year), Three Counties Marching Youth Band Championships and Tewkesbury Contests. They also held their annual inspection at Chequers Bridge Centre. They performed at Gloucester and Bishops Cleeve St. Georges Day parades, Christchurch Fete, St. Peters Fete, Hempsted Church Fete, Stroud Show, Gloucester and Cheltenham Carnivals, Gloucester and Evesham Remembrance Day parades.
We started two Beaver Scout Colonies one meeting at Chequers Bridge Centre and the other at Hempsted Church Hall.
1985Summer Camp for the Scouts was in Brixham, Devon.
The Band formed a majorette section which was to allow younger family members to join and become part of the band. They performed at Cheltenham College Rag week and Gloucester Remembrance Day Parade.
1984Summer Camp for the Scouts was at Park Mill, Gower.
The Band competed at the Royal Albert Hall, Three Counties Marching Youth Band Championships. They had a visit from the Dutch Youth Band ‘Govenvella’. The Dutch Scout Band also visited and held a concert at Chequers Bridge Centre. The Band also performed at Dean Close School Fayre, Ermin House Fete, Gloucester Carnival, Gloucester Fireworks Festival, Evesham and Gloucester Remembrance Parades.
1983Cotswold Marathon. Philip Iles won the fastest in the Cotswold Class (over 30’s) for the full route in a time of 9hrs 22mins.
Summer Camp for the Scouts was at Stoke Gabriel, Devon.
The Band stayed in Holland and toured around performing at various events, they entered the Royal Albert Hall, Avon, Three Counties Marching Youth Band Championships. They performed at Longlevens School Fete, Coney Hill Hospital Fete, North Leach Festival Charter, County Scout Gathering, Gloucester Carnival, Hucclecote Community Fete, Evesham and Gloucester Remembrance Day Parades, performed at Asda Open Evening and in a Carol Concert in Gloucester Leisure Centre by the side of the Barton Pool. Nigel Spicer became Bandmaster.

Weekend Camp. Spring bank holiday camp was held at Miserden.
Summer Camp for the Scouts was in the Gower, 14 nights.
The Band. Stephen Thomas became bandmaster, he finished that year to start his own band and Colin Turner became bandmaster. The Band entered Avon and Birmingham contests and attended a BYBA training course in Bath. The Band performed at an event on the Oxlease in front of Princess Anne. They achieved 29th place in the Championship Class (Division One) in the British Youth Band Association League out of 245 Bands. Drum Major, Ian Mackay came in 20th position.
1981Summer Camp for the Scouts was in Welshpool, 14 nights.
The Band entered the Leek, Birmingham Contest, they came 26th place in the Championship Class (Division One) out of 126 Bands in the British Youth Band Association (BYBA) League.
1980Weekend Camps. Cub Camp was held at Eastnor. The Cubs also camped indoors at Holly Barn, Saturday 25th till Sunday 26th October.
Summer Camp for the Scouts and Venture Scouts was in the Lake District, 14 nights. 
The Band entered the Royal Albert Hall contest.
1979Summer Camp for the Scouts was in Welshpool for 9 nights.
Weekend Camps. Cub indoor camp was held at Bracelands in October. Some German Scouts from Trier camped at Cranham.
The Band traveled to Gouda and took part in the National Dutch Band Championships, they also entered an indoor contest at Central hall in Birmingham, they also entered the indoor contest at the Royal Albert hall Contest, and Leek Contest.
1978Cotswold Marathon. Philip Iles, Steve Thomas & Nigel Spicer won the Fastest senior class team for the full route in a time of 9hrs 57mins.
Weekend Camp. Whitson camp was held at Jackbarrow Polo Field, Miserden.
Summer Camp for the Scouts and Venture Scouts was a tour of the twin towns of Gloucester, which at the time were Metz in France (4 nights), Gouda in Holland (5 nights) and Trier in Germany (5 nights), total of 16 nights.
The Band entered Leek (Staffordshire, Moorelands), Kidsgrove, the Scout Nationals in Sheffield, Poole, and Birmingham Contests
1977Cotswold Marathon. Phillip Iles, Nigel Spicer & Alan Prosser won the Fastest senior class team for the full route in a time of 10hrs 5mins.
Weekend Camps. Cub camp at Bracelands during March. Jubilee Weekend camp, 3rd till 6th June, on camp were 31 Cubs, 19 Scouts, 4 Senior Scouts, 10 Cub Leaders, 5 Scout Leaders, 1 Senior Scout Leader and two other Leaders (72 in total).
Summer Camp for the Scouts and Venture Scouts was in Aberdovey, 12 nights.
The Band entered Avon and won Runners Up and best Scout and Guide Band, Kidsgrove and won Runners Up and Drum Major, Three Counties Marching Youth Band Championships and won Supreme Champions, Winners in Class, Drum Major, Wind Section, Drum Section and Turnout, Nottingham and won Runners Up and Poole Contest and now had a complete range of brass instruments. They won lots of trophies and achieved 13th place in the Championship Class (Division One) of the British Youth Band Association League (BYBA).
1976National Scouting Change. Girls were now allowed to join Venture Scouts.
Cotswold Marathon. Philip Iles, Steve Thomas and Nigel Spicer won the fastest senior class team for the full route in a time of 8hrs 56mins.
Weekend Camps. Whitson camp was held at Holly Barn. Cubs had an indoor camp at Bracelands on Friday 22nd till Sunday 24th October.
Summer Camps. The Scouts was in the Lake District, 7 nights. The Venture Scouts went on a narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal from Braunston.
Group. This was the first year of the Three Counties Marching Youth Band Championships which was organised by the Group. This was held at Selwyn School in Matson.
The Band started meeting at Chequers Bridge Centre, Painswick road for music practice on Tuesday nights. They added trombones to their instrumentation and changed to Khaki shirts and brown ties. They entered Avon, Kidsgrove, Poole and won Turnout and Drum Major, Kidsgrove and won Runners up and Brass section the Scout Nationals at West Bromwich where they won the Novice Brass Band Section and were promoted to the Championship Class in the British Youth Band Association.

Summer Camp for the Scouts was at Rydal Hall, Lake District. On camp were 3 members of Kestrel Patrol, 3 members of Kingfisher Patrol, 4 members of Falcon Patrol, 3 other helpers 4 Leaders plus two children, 7 nights.

1971Weekend Camp. Whitson camp was held at Miserden Saturday 29th till Monday 31st May.
Summer Camps. The Scouts was on a narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal starting from Braunston Saturday 7th till Saturday 14th August, 7 nights.
The Band changed to rod tensioned side drums, tenor and bass drums and also bought new bugles. The Band entered the Scout Nationals Band Championships at Harrogate, they also took part in Gloucester Carnival, Randwick Wap, Gloucester Remembrance Day Parade and Gloucester St. Georges Day Parade.
1970Summer Camp for the Scouts was in Swanage, 8 nights.
The Band. The 14th Gloucester Guide Company were invited to join the band. The band entered its first contest at the 6th National Scout Band Championships in Warwick. The Guides first parade as members of the band was Gloucester Remembrance day Parade, which was the last parade to leave from Kings Square before the new development was started. The Band took part in Gloucester Carnival, Haresfield Fete and Winchombe Fete.
1969Summer Camp for the Scouts was a tour of Wales, this camp was held during Whitson Week, Friday 23rd till Tuesday 27th May.
1968Summer Camp for the Scouts was held in Ireland, they camped at Crawfordsburn Scout Camp Site for 14 nights.
1967National Scouting change. Senior Scouts became known as Venture Scouts.

The Band traveled to Brighton to perform at a garden fete, 25 members traveled in the back of a Morris Commercial and an Austin Ten. They also performed in Penarth and took part in Gloucester St. Georges Day parade, which at the time was known as Bob a Job Parade.
1957The Group stared it’s own marching band, who were then known as the 46th Gloucester Scout Band. They used a few second hand bugles and drums. The Bandmaster was Doug Neaves (Grom). The first band event was at Kingsholm Rugby Ground as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of Scouting.
Summer Camp for the Scouts was held at Horner in Somerset, 12 nights.

1954First Weekend Camp. The Scout Patrol Leaders and Seconds went on the first camp held by the Group, they camped at Cranham in June.
The first Summer Camp was held this year for the Scouts, they camped at Llangynider in Wales for 7 nights..
1953The Group was formed in April meeting at Christchurch Hall, Montpellier, Gloucester.  Seven boys turned up to the first meeting, it didn’t take long for more boys to join the Wolf Cubs and Scout Sections. The Group Scout Master (now known as Group Scout Leader) was Colin James. Cub Leader (Akela) was Jean James, along with assistants Bunty and Jennifer.
